How agentic AI is changing underwriting
Large lenders have moved past simple scorecards and chatbots toward agentic systems that chain tasks, retrieve files, and make action recommendations. These systems can ingest months or years of transaction history, payroll feeds, billing data, and alternative indicators to generate a credit recommendation in seconds. Banks say this speeds decisions and reduces manual review, while early deployments show the technology is being woven into core lending pipelines.
Examples from the industry
Several major firms have publicly described internal platforms that behave like digital employees, orchestrating data from multiple systems and producing customer-facing outcomes. One large global bank recently rolled out a centralized agent platform described as an "operating system" for automated analysis and scenario testing, with the explicit goal of letting agents compile portfolio data and run underwriting scenarios at scale. That shift reflects a push to move more decision work from human desks into software.
Regulators push back and set rules
Federal regulators have updated model risk and AI guidance in response to the shift. New interagency model risk guidance emphasizes a risk based approach to governance and specifically calls out banks' use of generative and agentic AI as an area that will receive closer attention. The agencies stress that institutions must validate models, track training data, and maintain oversight when agents take actions that affect customers.
At the same time, consumer protection authorities have reiterated existing obligations about adverse action notices and transparency when automated systems drive credit decisions. The guidance reminds lenders that expanding the types of data used in automated models does not relieve them of duties to explain denials and to provide legally required notifications. Regulators are telling banks that speed cannot come at the cost of notice or accountability.
Practical risks and trade offs
A congressional watchdog study and agency interviews flagged predictable concerns: model bias, data quality gaps, consumer privacy, and cybersecurity risks. The study found that while AI is widely used to inform staff decisions, most regulators expect outputs to be supervised rather than acting as the sole decision maker. That supervision requirement is central because agentic systems can amplify errors quickly across millions of accounts.
For customers, the upside is clearer: faster approvals, more tailored offers, and fewer manual paperwork delays. The downside is opacity. When a digital agent uses a mix of internal transactions, third party signals, and derived scores, it can be difficult to explain why a loan was approved or declined in human terms.

Banks that adopt these systems face a governance test: align fast, agentic workflows with explainability, audit trails, and customer notice. Executives and examiners are already building new roles and control frameworks to supervise agents and validate their behavior. The near term will be defined by how well institutions combine automation with strong oversight, and how regulators enforce transparency when a machine shapes a person's financial future.
